In 2011, Gretchen founded The Love Quilt Project after a mission trip to South Africa with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, Virginia. The focus of this trip was to complete the construction of a foster home for 6 children in the township of Masiphumelele. During this experience, Gretchen realized there was a much bigger need across South Africa to help support the millions of children who had been orphaned mostly due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. There was also a realization that American children needed to learn more about what was happening in South Africa. Gretchen’s passion for art and textiles and her involvement in child development came together with the design of a quilt that would not only wrap a child in warmth but also be filled with messages of love created by American children.
